Ok. A while back I dropped a comment in an open thread about a philosophy class I was taking. I wanted some advice about whether or not I should drop it, because philosophy was my minor but I hated it. Everyone that responded was really supportive and advised me to let it go. And my life is better for it. Thank you.
Now I need some more advice.
I was recently in a car accident. Totally my fault. I rear ended someone with my Saturn. The original estimate on fixing the damage (replacing hood, bumper, fender, driver side quarterpanel and driver side headlight) was $1700, minus the $500 deductible. I got a call today from the insurance company telling me that they went out to look at it and the estimate was revised to $3700, which is more than 70% of market value, and therefore the car is a total loss. Sounds ridiculous to me. In all fairness though, the guy that gave me the estimate said that on plastic cars, like a Saturn, once they crack the hood open they almost always find more damage.
Anyhow, they tell me that someone from the "Total Loss Unit" (sounds sinister to me) will call me tomorrow and make a settlement offer. I'm worried that I'm going to get screwed.
Does anyone have any experience dealing with this? It's all new to me, so any advice would be appreciated. I did look up the Minnesota Statute regarding this sort of thing and called my parent's lawyer. He said that they have to give me a settlement that will put me in an approximately comporable position (i.e., a similar car with similar mileage).
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
